Man: The Only Animal Who Kills For Fun

Last weekend three dead wallabies were left behind a table at the Mission Beach Wallaby Protection Society’s protest site.

One wallaby was a 5-year-old mum with a 3-week-old pinkie in her pouch which had been left to die. The other female wallaby was about 1 year old. The mum wallaby is not a fresh kill as her body was bloated and her eyes were bulging. This may indicate that she was saved especially for this purpose.

The Society had been at the site for three nights and received positive support from community members. Unfortunately, they have also been verbally abused and threatened by some people. This gruesome act is an example of the lengths to which some people will go to intimidate and scare others.

The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection issued damage mitigation permits (licenses that allow hunters to kill a specific number of native wildlife) to kill 2,000 Agile Wallabies on the basis that there was a loss of income to property owners. However, no cattle has been run on the land for years. The Society is currently seeking legal advice regarding this to confirm whether or not the permits are legal.

Also, no scientific study or environmental impact review has been done to accurately determine the wallaby population in the area and no study has been performed to analyze the affects the wallabies have on the environment - positive or negative as it may be.

The South Mission Beach Agile Wallaby is a unique and separate species that has not been classified. Once scientists research the animals, they will discover that the population is so limited that they might already be endangered.

A petition against the killing now has more than 2,100 signatures in support and can be found at www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/ehp-parks-wildlife-stop-the-killing-culling-of-2000-wallabies-in-mission-beach

We hope that increased awareness surrounding this issue will bring about a solution that is beneficial to all and that the violence against humans and animals is stopped.

My Way or The Highway

Gina Rinehart's company lawyers have been in touch with Miles Heffernan, who has petitioned on change.org, asking her to stop pursuing two journalists - Rinehart's lawyers. They are demanding Mr Heffernan change the petition to include her point of view.

They gave him a 6-hour deadline to include their reasons for subpoenaing journalists Adele Ferguson and Steve Pennells. Mr Heffernan declined.

Two journalists could be jailed, given fines and have a permanent conviction for protecting their sources.

Journalist and author Debi Marshall has now also been served a subpoena by the lawyers of billionaire Gina Rinehart and has been included in the petition.

On the 30 days of Press Freedom Facebook page, Marshall says “Rinehart has used her privately held company to subpoena all correspondence between me and her son, John Hancock, to be used in a private family dispute. I was given until Good Friday to comply. I would rather go to jail than break my professional code of ethics.”

All this from someone who holds a board position at Channel 10 and wants to be on the board of one of Australia's biggest media companies, Fairfax.

Go to change.org and sign the petition.

Don't Be Coerced

Police are warning local residents to exercise caution when engaging home maintenance service people following a report of an attempted roof painting scam earlier this week.

An elderly resident of Gordonvale was approached by two men who used high pressure sales tactics to enter his property and conduct cleaning and painting work. One of the men commenced spray painting the house roof whilst the other man was attempting to coerce the resident into a cash payment.

An alert neighbour intervened and challenged the men as to their bona-fides, at which time they packed up and left the area. The completed work was subsequently found to be of an extremely poor standard.

Police believe that the men may be able to assist with inquiries in relation to a number of other similar incidents. They are believed to be driving a white 2009 model Ford Falcon utility bearing Qld registration 594-SNQ.

One is described as being aged in his mid 50's and is about 170cm tall. He has a portly build and greying dark hair. The second man is believed to be an Englishman aged about 25 years, about 175cm tall with fair hair.

Anyone with information which could assist police should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.
