Leading The Way In Road Safety
A continued road safety campaign to cut road deaths and injuries because of texting at the wheel has been launched by Ravenshoe Police and local community groups. Members of the Ravenshoe State School P&C, Ravenshoe R.S.L. and the Ravenshoe Masonic Lodge have banded together with the Police to fund 40 signs for Far North Queensland on the dangers of texting while driving. The signs were officially launched last weekw with a small ceremony being held at the Ravenshoe Police Station. Ravenshoe Police Sgt Michael Musumeci, head of the award winning R.A.P.T.A.R. Project (Reduce Accidents, Prevent Tragedy, Activate Resources), said the signs were another weapon to fight carnage on the roads. “We are presently seeking approval with the Tablelands Regional Council to approve strategic locations throughout the Tablelands to implement these signs, targeting our younger generations and heavy volume local roads throughout the Tablelands. We are also focussing our attention on High schools, Private business and areas that have large volumes of traffic for events that may be interested in implementing these signs. Ravenshoe has been instrumental in being positive towards effective road safety change. The community should be commended for their continued involvement in road safety.” The approach to road safety must be everyone's responsibility and Ravenshoe continues to do just that. It is further hoped these signs will be distributed throughout the Far North. It's a Project that has potential for many private businesses in which their employees drive for their job as well as High Schools and various other potential areas. "Road users have to understand when you text or use a phone whilst driving you are 4 times more likely to have a serious crash, you are distracted, your awareness is dramatically reduced and you have slower reaction times. All of these factors can cause a serious crash ” |
