Atherton
Atherton is a lovely place to visit, and as it is centrally located to most of the attractions on the Tablelands is a perfect base to explore the Tablelands area. As the major service centre for the Atherton Tablelands it has several supermarkets, cafes and restaurants, Golf Club, bowls, indoor cricket and tenpin bowling. There is plenty of accommodation - hotels, bed and breakfasts, caravan parks, backpacker hostels and retreats. Atherton is only about an hour and twenty minutes' drive south-west of Cairns airport. |
Cairns
The far north’s major coastal centre with a population of over 130,000, Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest. Tourist attractions abound, with diving, bungy jumping, water skiing, hiking and birdwatching just as a start! Accommodation ranges from backpacker hostels to five star resorts and there is a great multicultural range of restaurants to tempt your tastebuds. |
Croydon
Home of the annual Poddy Dodgers festival and the destination for the Gulflander train, Croydon is a town of historic significance. With a population of around 250, Croydon boasts Lake Belmore, the largest body of freshwater in the region, a museum, tourist information centre, general store, hospital, hotel, caravan park and a primary school. At 525km west of Cairns, Croydon is a great place to stay. |
Forsayth
408km west of Cairns, 341km east of Normanton and 35km northeast of Cobbold Gorge, Forsayth is an historic mining town with a hotel with accommodation, caravan park with cabins, post office, police station, hospital and fuel stop. It has a population of around 90 and is serviced weekly by The Savannahlander train. |
Georgetown
Established on the site of the 1870s gold rush on the Etheridge River, Georgetown is now a quiet town of around 300 people. Just over 400km from Cairns and 300km to Normanton, the town is the centre of the Etheridge gold field and a magnet for amateur gold prospectors. Georgetown has two caravan parks, a motel and hotel, service stations and shopping facilities. |
Herberton
The oldest town on the Atherton Tablelands and 90 minutes west of Cairns, Herberton has plenty of accommodation from caravan park, pub, motel and B&B. Spectacular during the Jacaranda season, it is a pretty town all year round with several buildings of historical significance. |
Karumba
Karumba is on the mouth of the Norman River and the centre of the Gulf’s prawning industry. Fishermen from around the world go to Karumba for the fishing, but this little town has a lot more than that. The sunsets are just beautiful and the wetlands surrounding the area are home to pelicans, cyrus cranes, brolgas and black swans and it isn’t unusual to see flocks feeding beside the roads. There is a caravan park and motels but you should always book ahead due to Karumba’s popularity. Karumba is 750km west of Cairns and 570km north of Mt Isa. |
 Millaa Millaa
Millaa Millaa is a small town on the Atherton Tablelands (population 295). It is about 60km west of Innisfail and surrounded by World Heritage listed rainforest and rolling green hills. Some of the most beautiful waterfalls you’ll ever see are within a few minutes of town – Zillie Falls, Ellinjaa Falls and many more. Millaa Millaa has a supermarket, coffee shop and hotel. Millaa Millaa is either named after the Milay Milay vine (Elaegnus triflora) or the aboriginal word for plenty of water. |
Ravenshoe
At 930 metres above sea level, Ravenshoe is the highest town in Queensland, with the highest pub and railway station. The Millstream Falls near town is the widest waterfall in Australia. Ravenshoe is located close to waterfalls, swamps, crater lakes, rainforests and historical landmarks. Just outside town is the Windy Hill Wind Farm which has twenty turbines. The Misty Mountain Wilderness trails give some of the best bushwalking experiences in Queensland. Ravenshoe is 123km from Cairns and has a population of around 1000. |
